2009 P-51B Mustang is followup to 2008 P-51A

ROUSH has announced its second aviation-themed Mustang paying homage to the legendary World War II fighter planes. The 2009 P-51B Mustang joins the P-51A (seen last year) in ROUSH’s aviation inspired pony cars. The P-15B Mustang will see a limited production run of just 51 units but ROUSH is quick to say that it may build some extra units for the press and testing.

Appearance wise the 2009 P-51B Mustang comes in Vapor paint with Olive Drab green stripes. ROUSH designers added black-chrome wheels, a ROUSH vent pod gauge with a boost gauge, Cooper RS3 high-performance tires, a rear decklid and ROUSH’s 6-piece aerobody kit. Inside you’ll find P-51B badging on the shifter ball, floor mats and the leather seats.

Power comes from a 4.6L supercharged V8 that pumps out 510-hp with a maximum torque of 510 lb-ft. Performance was increased with upgrades to the clutch and custom-calibration for the ECM to manage the performance of the TVS2300 ROUSHcharger. ROUSH also added 6-piston brakes and its Stage 3 suspension for extra stopping and handling power.
Pricing for starts at $65,800. All ROUSH cars are available with a 3-year/36,000 mile warranty.

Action Mobil:New Globecruiser model—first picture

The new Globecruiser model—first picture below—fits the bill nicely. Due for a shakedown trip to Africa in April 2009, it’s based on the MAN TGA 6×6 platform—as occasionally used by Unicat, that other purveyor of expedition excess.

The two fuel tanks hold 219 gallons. A refill costs enough to put an Icelandic bank out of business, but if you can afford the Globecruiser’s €490,000 ($670,000) sticker price, you can afford $800 at the pump.

Motive power comes from a giant 783ci turbodiesel, which pumps out a very healthy 388 kW. (Actually, make that a fairly healthy 388 kW—this mill doesn’t meet the latest EURO 5 regulations, but EURO 3 isn’t too bad considering.)

The water capacity is equally awe-inspiring at 154 gallons, which no doubt contributes to the Globecruiser’s 21-ton weight. So don’t ask what the mileage is. But if that makes you feel guilty, check out the 4 x 240W solar system, which supplements the batteries and LPG tanks. Drivers are well looked after too, with heated air-suspension seats, and satellite systems to provide pinpoint navigation to the nearest водка bar.

Action Mobil’s main competitor is Unicat, which builds most of its expedition vehicles on the Unimog platform. Check out our Unicat profile for more details and pict

You probably won’t bump into Al Gore driving an Action Mobil. But if you’re a well-heeled survivalist, a Mad Max re-enactor or a Robb Report reader, get your PA to call +43 6582 72712-0. And get Stephan on the line.

Action Mobil’s website is rather dodgy, but whatever. These guys are engineers, not online marketing specialists. Around 250 expedition vehicles have rolled out of the Saalfelden werks since 1979, and the company recently delivered the world’s largest all-wheel-drive motorhome to a client in the Middle East. (Where gas prices are presumably of little concern.)

Paris Motor Show:Ferrari California

Ferrari, having gone massively GT with 612 Scaglietti, have provided another avenue for this type of vehicle by offering California customers a choice of either bench-style sitting behind the two front seats or seating for one or two passengers. It’s for those times when 460 horses demand to be shared with an appreciative audience. That 4.3-litre V8 and its 485Nm hurl the California from 0 – 100km/h in “under 4 seconds”, running out of punch at 310km/h. The Ferrari California turns in 13.1 litres/100 km (ECE combined) and emits 305.6 g\km in harmful carbons.

Various suspension settings are possible depending on the driver’s whim at the time, but the California was conceived primarily as a track star, and will therefore always gravitate towards that origin no matter what setting. For example, the new 7-speed double-clutch gearbox is a big factor when it comes to fuel efficiency, yet it is quick on the change and can be enacted using F1-style steering-wheel paddle shifters. This is a very well-equipped Ferrari, featuring comforts like iPod jack, sat nav, 6.5-inch touch screen and a USB port. Nice to have, but can’t really compare to the chorus of 460 mares through that tunnel.

In California they say women are as fast as the cars, and that on the beaches they drop their tops as quickly as this Ferrari California. At 14 seconds from up to down it may be really hard to beat, by the summer ladies that is. It’s a hardtop made of aluminium to keep the weight down. And when it’s down there is very little to quieten-down that V8 which sings a chorus that only 460 horses can sing through those four pipes at the back. Those concave/ convex lines that change direction as quickly as the California on a long stretch of freeway, on their way from the front to the elevated rear, LED lights protruding just slightly from where the spoiler meets boot.

Benzs.blogspot~BMW to Enter Small Petrol Turbo Engine Fray

BMW brand will be turbocharging its smallest engines. We knew this of course, but this is the first confirmation by a BMW official of this fact. Jim O’Donnell, big boss of BMW in North America told Business Week that the engines will be 4-cylinder, turbocharged, offer stronger acceleration than the current 6-cylinder (NG6) and spew out better emission figures.

Sounds impossible but Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz have been doing it for years already. That Bavaria was going to join the party was not a matter of if, but when. Ok, we still don’t know when, but at least we know it’s no longer IF. We also don’t know if these engines will be just one engine size or different sizes, and if they will use single turbos or two. Lots of ifs still, but we can live with these.

By twin-turbocharging their 2-litre diesel engine in the 123D, BMW signaled their intention for smaller petrol powerplants as well. Remember, they first used these new generation turbos in their oil-sippers, then petrol. O’Donnell also could not confirm if this Euro-bound engine will cross the Atlantic or not, only to say it depends on the new US Federal government and how they view America’s energy future. How sad is that?

Juicy Details for MTM Supercharged Audi R8

The quattro drive system is still responsible for some handling, grip and shove as per the normal car. It puts power into Michelin Sport Cups rated at 245/30-20” and 315/25-20” front and back, wrapped around MTM Bimoto forged rims. Although Audi hasn’t said much regarding the R8 V10 yet, the feeling is it may just hover around these figures too.

It has been a while hasn’t it? Six months to be exact, since we ran a piece on MTM working on their supercharged R8. Of course every tuner even remotely affiliated with the Audi brand is doing some form of conversion on this halo car. MTM is done now and they have released details of what sort of monster their Dr Frankensteins have created. On the 4.2-litre V8 a belt driven srew supercharger has been screwed to release a good dose of 560PS (412kW) at a screaming 7750 rpm.

Forwarding this power is 580Nm of torque available at 5500 rpm. As a result the MTM R8 sends itself into a flying frenzy of 0 – 100km/h in 3.9 seconds, 0 to 200km/h in 12.5 seconds. After that effortless drive we cut out at 301km/h with the limiter on, 315km/h with no limiter.

Michael Schumacher Caught Speeding In Germany

Evidently unable to control his urges, Michael Schumacher has been caught speeding in his native Germany. The Polizei pulled Schumi over driving above the posted 62 MPH limit, slapping him with a fine of about $108 and three points on his license. But that only equates to ten over the speed limit — some claim he was actually caught doing 87 MPH — not a big deal to you and me, but according to highly precise German law, Schumi should have gotten his license suspended. So what does the F1 meister have to say about all this?

Violent explosions heard at the Heffner home aren’t of three blonde bombshells posing for pictures. That’s a different Heffner. This one’s in Florida and them explosions are real enough, happening beneath the surface of a Lamborghini Gallardo’s bonnet. Thereupon they make a stupid 694kW at the wheels and peak torque of 1032Nm, which is just as dumb. Even dumber is the possibility that Heffner Performance will ‘disable’ the car’s standard AWD system to put traction responsibilities solely at the feet of the rear wheels.

Heffner's Performance Twin-Turbo Lamborghini Gallardo features:

benzs-Porsche Cayman S by Inden Design

German tuning firm Inden Design just couldn’t wait for the official Cayman S Sport to be revealed, and so they did what they are in business for; tuned their own. The new exhaust system fitted in the car – what a cracker that looks too – helped it push 19 more bhp to 314 bhp. Apparently the exhaust flaps work with the control unit which works in conjuction with a small microprocessor. This processor is embedded in the system and is freely programmable.
A sports kit which one needs not tell you about as you can already see it yourself, lists 19-inch alloy wheels running on 235/35 R19 tyres on the front side and 305/25 R19 for the rear. H&R height adjustable coil covers add to the performance package of this 3.4-litre baby Porsche.

All New Honda Jazz/Fit Revealed

The all-new Honda Jazz have been revealed a month ahead of its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, revealing a wider and lower grille with an optional glass roof.

Called the Honda Fit on the local market in Japan, the new Jazz builds on much of the technology of the predecessor like the fuel tank located in the centre of the vehicle with a flat floor.

It delivers stronger performance with improved economy and emissions from its two new engines, has more space and is even easier to use.

New ACE body structure

Even more efficient safety performance results from the introduction of the ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure, a concept that is being progressively rolled out across the Honda range. Its structure, in particular a front polygonal main frame, helps to reduce the negative effect of misalignment between vehicles of different sizes and construction and multiple energy absorbing pathways disperse impact energy to prevent cabin deformation.

Standard on all models are dual front and side airbags, full length side curtain airbags and three-point seatbelts in all five seating positions, those in the front with dual-stage pretensioners. The front passenger airbag can also be deactivated to allow a rear facing child seat to be fitted to the front seat and for the first time Jazz is equipped with seatbelt reminders for both the front and rear seats. Front seats are also fitted with active headrests to minimise the potential for whiplash injuries.

Two ISOFIX fittings in the left and right rear seats together with tether anchors in the roof ensure correct child seat installation.

Larger, more refined cabin with even better functionality

The ingenious interior layout of the original Jazz, with its compact suspension and centrally-mounted fuel tank liberating more load space, together with the increased external dimensions of the new model, mean interior comfort has been taken to a new level.

Rear seat passengers now have 37 mm greater knee room, while the distance between front and rear passengers is up by 30 mm. The slightly wider body also means shoulder room increases by 44 mm in the front and 43 mm in the rear.

Visibility gets a considerable boost, too. Reduced width A-pillars, a larger windscreen and quarter windows three times the size of those in the previous model make for more relaxed driving, while retractable rear headrests ensure the view out of the rear window is now totally unobscured.

Magic Seats now one-motion dive-down

Given the popularity of the previous Jazz's innovative ‘cinema' style rear seats, it comes as little surprise that Honda chose to offer a similar arrangement in the new car; but while the latest Magic Seats operate on the same principle, they are even more convenient since they have a one-motion, dive-down operation. No longer is there a need to move the front seats forward to collapse the rear seats. Instead, thanks to headrests that are virtually flush with the seatback, the 2:1 split rear seats are able to clear the front seats even when the latter are slid back to their rearmost position.
New Double-Trunk boot feature (1.4-litre models)

The outstanding practicality of the Magic Seats concept is complemented in the new Jazz by a flexible luggage area based on similar principles to the arrangement found in the Honda CR-V. Standard on 1.4 models, which are equipped with a tyre repair kit, the Double-Trunk boot features an underfloor storage area concealed by a double hinged panel - Regular Mode. The 230 mm deep, 64 litre capacity lower compartment is ideal for stashing sports gear or wet items, and once covered, won't soil other luggage.

The floor can be removed altogether or folded up against the rear seats to make full use of the total depth available - ideal for particularly tall objects (Tall Mode). Alternatively, rather than folding the complete panel against the seat backs, its rear half can be folded up to create a load shelf at half height - so creating a double load space - Upper/lower Mode. Heavier items can be stored below, while lighter items can be placed on the upper shelf, and since it incorporates a load net, is perfect for carrying awkwardly shaped items, preventing them from moving around.

Total luggage space available is 399 litres in models with a tyre repair kit, greater than that of some compact MPVs and class-leading in the supermini sector. The previous Jazz had a total of 380 litres (VDA).

Refined cabin environment

High quality, pleasant-to-the touch materials, stylish design and tasteful colours give the cabin a more upmarket feel.

More comfortable front seats with better support, a driver's footrest, a height adjustable driver's seat, a steering wheel adjustable for reach and rake and larger rear seats are just some of the features that contribute to the more cosseting, more relaxed cabin environment. Extra sound insulation and the increased body rigidity also play their part in making the Jazz a pleasant place to be. And for a real sense of spaciousness, the Jazz 1.4 EX is equipped with a panorama roof that extends over the rear seats for a great aerial view. Heat absorbing glass and a power sun shade ensure a comfortable cabin environment all year round.

2010 Renault Alpine Sportscar All But Confirmed?

Underpinning this vehicle would be an Infiniti G37/ Nissan 370 Z base, which we think wouldn’t be a lame idea in the least bit, given the outstanding handling characteristics of these two cousins. Moreover, the name Alpine would be the one to carry a sports Renault. You know the name from decades ago when it used to build winning racing cars using Renault engines. Although WCF reported on such a car a few weeks ago, it has been very much a rumour. Up until now.

While Renault car sales in France have been robust in the first half of 2008, in Europe – its biggest market – the group is down 4.6 percent. If higher sales and better market penetration is the question, could a sports coupé be the answer? The Cartribe reckon Renault thinks so. They say after an interview with one of Renault’s highest-ranking officials, news was revealed to them of a sportscar similar to the Nissan’s 350Z will be on sale by 2010.

A Renault proper sportscar we suspect would use a relatively small turbo engine rather than a large V6 block for obvious reasons; weight, compactness, emissions and a possible return of the turbo to Formula One. The car will not be based on any existing Renault car and will be quite different, even radical in styling. Renault desperately needs to justify its multi-million-Euro involvement in F1 and so far, as good as RenaultSport is, it hasn’t happened to the extent desired.

Car News Is the BMW M6 CSL Still Coming?

In early 2004 we had a small but very informative conversation with a highly-placed source at BMW. The person revealed that the then-new 6 Series would indeed go quite above 300kW. Much higher. It turned out reference was to the M6, all 378kW of it. That’s not the very interesting part by the way; your yawns are telling. That part is the story of a “lightweight” 6, something we might call an M6 CSL.

Our source confirmed the future production of such a model, but claimed it probably won’t be badged a CSL. And while we trust this source almost 100 percent, we can’t help but nervously look at the clock, relentlessly ticking away. New model 6 is due out in 2010, yet we still have no M6 CSL.

Meanwhile, a growing number of insiders are talking about an M3 CSL, slated for the year 2010. It is said to carry about 100kg less than the standard 4.0-litre V8, but adds at least 30 bhp in the process, giving it a 4.5 second shoot from zero to 60 mph. Excess fat will be trimmed ala the usual suspect material, carbon fiber. Slicker rubber as well as other minuses will ensure these performance figures. What of the Nürburgring though? A time of 7:45 is thought to be the target for that.

The New MMI Generation from Audi

Audi is increasing its lead in infotainment technology even further. A new generation of the MMI, the supreme solution for multimedia, communication and operation, has been announced. With a high-capacity hard disk, a DVD drive and fast processors, it is much more versatile and its performance is higher than ever before. The new MMI’s first appearance will be in the A8 luxury sedan, but before long it will also be available for two other model lines.

MMI set new standards from the very start, and proved to be the yardstick the competitors had to equal. Its status was confirmed by many wins in comparative tests. The system was also adopted for the A6 and Q7 model lines, and for the new A4. In this area of technology, the brand with the four-ring emblem pioneered progress from the front.

In 2002, when the Audi MMI (Multi Media Interface) was launched, journalists and the general public were unanimous: the new Audi concept was the best on the market. With its control knob on the center tunnel and large function keys to select the main operating areas, it was effortless to control, with self-evident logic that was repeated on the MMI display. Audio, TV, information, telephone and navigation – never before had the driver been able to control all these areas so intuitively.

Apart from the control terminal, the monitor screen is the second important interface between the system and its users. For the new MMI, Audi has provided a large TFT display measuring seven inches from corner to corner. It is located in an ergonomically favorable position high up on the center console. With the very high resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and LED backlighting, this monitor supplies an exceptionally sharp image with plenty of contrast. Even in poor light conditions, the colors are intense against the black background.

Audi has been intensively developing every aspect of its MMI system. The full version, MMI navigation plus, is now a state-of-the-art high-end system. The basic operating principle has been retained, but the innovative joystick makes it even more convenient. This joystick is located on the central knob and can be moved in eight directions – with high precision and the sense of quality that the Audi driver expects.

3D map displays.
On the big screen, the stage is set for another of the new MMI system’s attractive innovations: the way that maps are presented when the navigation system is in use. The driver can choose between the conventional two-dimensional view and the new 3D images. These feature a birds-eye perspective of the map area, with plenty of carefully presented detail. As in an atlas, the various heights above sea level are shown in different colors, and the most important buildings in large cities appear in three dimensions.

As before, there are elegant crossfades between the individual screen displays, an effect that makes the overall impression created by the graphics even more fascinating. If the driver alters the automatic air conditioning settings, the new ones appear in a small screen panel for several seconds. This pop-up window doesn't occupy very much space, so that the MMI user can still see the main screen content at any time.

If the driver uses voice input to load a destination into the navigation system, this can now be done without spelling out the individual letters. The new MMI understands complete words in a number of national languages. The same applies to the new high-performance telephone directory, which can store up to 5,000 entries each with five numbers for each user.

The technology used here is called “synthetic language”. In a studio, pairs of individual sounds – these are called “diphones” – are recorded and saved to part of the MMI's memory as data sets. High-speed software identifies them in the driver’s commands, combines them and compares the complete words with the term in the list, for instance “August Horch Strasse Ingolstadt”. The same synthetic language principle is used in reverse for the audible guidance instructions, which sound smooth and natural. The driver can choose between detailed or compact audible guidance modes.

Music and entertainment: the DVD drive.
In the entertainment area too, the latest Audi MMI sets new standards. It has an integral drive for video DVDs; the new joystick function on the control knob is especially practical for this. When played back with the optional sound systems, DVD soundtracks can be heard in Dolby Digital 5.1 multi-channel sound and other frequently used formats. For safety reasons, the picture is only displayed to the driver when the car is standing still. The system also plays music from CDs and SD cards, including those coded MP3, AAC and WMA. Additional technical modules have made the MMI even more attractive. The optional Audi Music Interface makes a perfect connection with an mp3 player, for instance the customer's iPod. The complete menu structures and contents appear on the MMI display, and control is at the MMI terminal or the multifunctional steering wheel. A universal socket in the glove box and an adapter can be used to connect various players with a USB interface, and analog audio and video equipment.

Another audio highlight is the option of DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) reception. Digital radio signals are far superior to the analog standard in quality. Audi always uses a DAB double tuner in the MMI. This concept has the advantage that the DAB reception frequency can be changed without any interruption. One tuner receives the music signal, while the second searches continuously for alternative frequencies on which the same program is being broadcast. If a changeover takes place, it takes only a fraction of a second. Another advantage is that the list of stations is continuously updated.

The MMI system's modular structure makes it possible to integrate a CD changer and an analog/digital TV tuner. Audio quality is assured by a choice of sound systems. The top version in the Audi A8 comes as before from the Danish manufacturer Bang & Olufsen. With its rich, subtly differentiated sound spectrum and extended treble response from the tweeters, it provides pure delight for the ears.

The telephone is even more convenient to use with the new MMI. Using a Bluetooth chip, the system can fully integrate customers’ cell phones that support the SIM access profile. The MMI phone is ready for action as soon as the ignition key is inserted. It reads data from the SIM card and the memory into the A8's own memory, then shuts the cell phone down completely. Telephone operation via the car’s antenna is the key to optimal reception quality. A digital voice processor ensures the best hands-free quality; voice outputs are through the car’s sound system.

In the background: concentrated hi-tech.
The fantastic selection of functions that the new MMI offers is backed by hi-tech in concentrated form. The "main unit" computer is installed in the center console, and integrates all the functions that were previously performed by five separate units, including the DVD drive. One of its key components is the hard disk; 10 GB of its 40 GB capacity can be used as a jukebox, to store up to 4,000 tracks, all sorted for easy access. The hard disk also contains navigation data and an electronic logbook for the car.

Two processors, an 800 MHz chip and a 500 MHz digital signal processor, allow all applications – navigation, voice input, telephone and audio functions – to operate simultaneously, although each of them needs high performance from the computer. Using the 3D graphics processor from Californian 3D chip manufacturer Nvidia gives the MMI access to the third dimension. Audi has used this chip’s outstanding performance with graphics for the first time to provide a genuine 3D map display – a "digital topographical model". With this processor, the screen display sets new standards: it is attractive, with high resolution and presentation quality, smooth animation and crossfading.

A second block, the "radio unit", combines the tuner and sound system functions. A central interface connects the two units with the rest of the car’s network. All the new MMI components have been developed to comply with strict specifications issued by Audi in Ingolstadt. Audi's quality standards are as stringent as they always were. This is important because in-car operation, with extreme temperatures and vibration, imposes severe stresses on the electronics.

The new MMI will extend Audi's lead over its competitors. It can be ordered as of now for the A8 luxury sedan, and will be available before long in the Audi A6 and then in the new Audi Q5 performance SUV.
